WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS – JOE COCKER
Paris, 9th district, her world revolves around her group of friends. She has built herself a chosen family, one that feels just right. Of course, she loves her parents and her brother, but being the eldest has always made her crave independence.
She’s got this tomboy vibe, always wearing her CAPUCHE, barely caring about looking girly. But when she smiles, her femininity sneaks through.
For years, she and her friends would gather on the steps of Sacré-Cœur after school, as if being together as much as possible was essential. They met in middle school and never left each other’s side.
And then, there’s him. With him, it’s different. He’s her friend, but she loves him. He looks at other girls, and she stays silent, pretending it doesn’t matter. He tells her about his flings, and she listens just as much as she listens to her own heart beating. She borrows his sweater, soaked in his scent, and sleeps in it, but she would never dare tell him how she feels.
By the end of high school, she’s even more beautiful than she realizes. They all stay in Paris for their studies, but he dreams of Italy. He’s landed a spot at a fashion school. She hides her feelings, pretending it’s fine, but the emptiness he leaves behind is overwhelming.
It doesn’t take long for him to realize he’s struggling without them. He feels lost, out of place. He needs to come back to find himself again, to be with the people who have always been his anchor. Italy will just be a passing memory. His real life is here.
The moment she sees him again, her heart pounds so hard it almost hurts. She tries to act cool, she convinced herself she’s over him. But he looks at her and wonders how he never noticed before. How could he have missed something so obvious?
Late December. They sit on a bench, quiet, nervous, breathing in the winter air. Words aren’t needed. With their CAPUCHE pulled up, like in Doisneau “Les Baisers Casqués” they finally kiss. Now he knows why he had to come back. And she feels like she’s dreaming.
